Portugal is my new Home

Like many, I came to Portugal for a new beginning and a better future. Lisbon is a very nice city to live in. The sun, the greenery and the people are what states that Portugal is one of the best countries in the world.

The first couple of months I lived as a tourist, stayed in intercontinental Lisbon,  everyday I visited different places, tried the traditional food.

Then when all my legal papers were ready my journey to look for a job started. But here comes the surprise! I don’t know Portuguese, not a word. I’ve never studied Portuguese in my life nor know a word of it. Speaking English was fine almost everywhere, but trying to find a job was a bit challenging and the valid option was to find a English speaking job for now.

Motivation to learn Portuguese

When I came I was fine with speaking in English with almost all of the citizens but it all changed when I started work. All my colleagues who were planning to stay for 6 months or less were eager to learn Portuguese. I said okay, I will stop being lazy and I will do it. Gladly I signed up to Portuguese classes with one of my colleagues at work, she was fluent and ready to help, but it wasn’t of a big success. I just learnt a bit from here , a bit from there and didn’t actually get to know the rules and vocabulary in a professional way.

Next step I took was trying to be independent. I downloaded PDFs, used Duolingo and other apps but they all resulted in epic fail.

The Teacher

Until one of my friends mentioned my teacher, She said the teacher is really good and I could speak very well after only two months!!! Only two months and she could speak! She can actually understand so good and speak and read in a right way. I jumped out of the couch and called  the teacher, we had this first assessment class and she asked me what I know and what I don’t. We started to meet up and take our one and half hour and that was perfect. One day the teacher told me that she was travelling and we need to do our classes on Skype.

Skype Learning experience

Whattt??? Skype??? Me as an old school learner was not so convinced with Skype. The fact is I like to take notes, I am the type of girls with a marker 🙂 When I heard about the Skype lessons I was like no way that these would work. I will not be able to get all the information in the paper and I will not be able to concentrate and keep track.

But guess what? It was perfect, the teacher is so organised and she writes everything to keep you focused. She uses videos and audio and everything on this Skype window.

I got to know so much and we managed to take the classes same as we intended. When she was back we even continued to take the classes on Skype. Because I am usually an early bird and can take the class at 8.30 in the morning.and here I am developing everyday better than before , knowing more rules , more vocabulary and definitely everyone recognized the difference.

My Portuguese Then VS Now

I became better than I expected. The material was original and the teacher was professional and learning the Skype was brilliant.

The best practices of Skype for me as a busy woman was the ability to stay at home take my class whenever I want in the bedroom or in the kitchen ,in my pjs and in the best time that suits my busy schedule either in the early morning on Sundays or at 10.30 at night when my daughter goes to bed during weekdays.

I used Skype and Professional Teacher and Here are I am practicing Portuguese like a pro!
